*LEARNED OBEDIENCE* (II)
_Key Bible Text:_
*And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him* (Hebrews 5:9 (KJV))
_Bible Insight:_
Jesus passed under the tutelage of Mr Suffering to learn obedience. This therefore further qualified him, to become the perfect author of eternal salvation. Hallelujah. He was perfected under the disciplinary hands of Mr Suffering. This perfection, conferred on Christ the title of the author of eternal salvation. That is, salvation that is not made by man and not subject to time.
Jesus "became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him." This is very key. Eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him. Eternal salvation to those that obey Jesus. This eternal salvation is not conferred on the disobedient. Jesus learned obedience and became the author of this salvation. So must we too, through obedience, become partakers of this eternal salvation.

*LEARNED OBEDIENCE*
_Key Bible Text:_
*Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered* (Hebrews 5:8 (KJV))
_Bible Insight:_
If Jesus 'suffered' to learn obedience, imagine how much 'suffering' we would need to undertake to unlearn disobedience and learn obedience? If the one who knew no sin, the one who was without sin, the one true God who came in human form, needed suffering to learn obedience, we really need to understand and undertake this obedience-commanding suffering.
In understanding this suffering, we must refer to the context. The verse before this, stated how Jesus "offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared". This definitely points to one of the things he suffered. It is instructive to note that the trials and suffering Jesus faced, proved his obedience. Obedience is not confirmed in isolation or in a vacuum.
Commands, disciplines, instructions when obeyed and submitted to, reveals obedience. Those who jeered at Jesus, called him names, tested his patience, tried to get him offended, spat on him, ridiculed him, etc were all instrumental to the sufferings of Jesus. These helped him to learn and ultimately proved his obedience to the father. Finally, the fact that He needed to set aside his own will, for the Father's as he prayed, "O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." (Matthew 26:39 (KJV))

*FEAR SEEKS HELP* (II)
_Key Bible Text:_
*"Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared"* (Hebrews 5:7 (KJV))
_Bible Insight:_
Chapter five of Hebrews, skillfully compared the High Priesthood of Jesus with that of Melchizedek. In verse 7, it stated that when Jesus was in the flesh, he offered prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death. This passage could have stopped. Instead, it added, Jesus was heard in that he feared. Wow. Jesus feared!? Yes. And for that, He was heard!
Let's back-track. Where or when did Jesus offer such prayers and strong crying? Luke 22:42-44 provides this information, particularly Luke 22:44 (KJV): *"And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground."*
It is vital that when we see things that cause us to fear, we take the matter to the one who can help us. If Jesus did this, we too must do likewise. Positive fear or positive response to fear is never giving up simply because of fear but taking the matter to God in prayers and trusting God to provide solution.
*MEDITATION:*
*In the days of His flesh [Jesus] offered up definite, special petitions [for that which He not only wanted but needed] and supplications with strong crying and tears to Him Who was [always] able to save Him [out] from death, and He was heard because of His reverence toward God [His godly fear, His piety, in that He shrank from the horrors of separation from the bright presence of the Father].* (Hebrews 5:7 (AMP))

*FEAR SEEKS HELP*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.* (Hebrews 4:1 (KJV))
_Bible Insight:_
If you are a King James lover or student, you will see that Hebrews 4, starts with a line about "Fear" and ends with a line about "help". You can actually do some editing and remove all the words and verses in between, and you will be left with *"Let us therefore fear, .... and find grace to help in time of need."* Fear seeks help. Fear not only seeks help, it needs help.
Fear makes us realize we can't do it on our own. We need an external helping hand. Fear is not out of place in the life of the believer. A lot of teachings banish fear completely and demonize fear. There are many instances in scripture calling us to fear, directly and indirectly. Today's key text is one of such.
Fear, in this context drives us to seek help from God. It drives us to realize that the subject matter causing the fear is one that without our reliance on God, we wouldn't be able to handle on our own.
*MEDITATION:*
*Now, God has offered us the promise that we may receive that rest he spoke about. LET US TAKE CARE, then, that none of you will be found to have failed to receive that promised rest.* (Hebrews 4:1 (GNB))

*HELP IS NEAR*
_Key Bible Text:_
*"Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."* (Hebrews 4:16 (KJV))
_Bible Insight:_
There is an important background to Hebrews 4:16. The three verses that come before verse 16 is very instructive. Let's begin with verse 13.
*Hebrews 4:13 (KJV) Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.*
The point of this verse is clear. You can't "form for" God. You can't do cover ups. It's futile. He is everywhere and all knowing. You have nothing to hide. You can hide from your best friend, your parents or your partner or your pastors etc. Hey dear, you can't hide anything from God. This should encourage us to actually draw near to him. Knowing that, after all, He knows it all. Moving from this is verse 14.
*Hebrews 4:14 (KJV) Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.*
We have a great height priest, who have taken the road we are now taking and who saw all the twists and turns but made it to heaven. So we are encouraged to keep holding up and never turn away from the faith. This finally leads to verse 15.
*Hebrews 4:15 (KJV) For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.*
This is about the most beautiful of these lines of verses. Our great high priest is neither naive nor "innocent". This means, He knows all there's to know about human feelings, failings and flaws. He knows the great temptations that rocks our boats and resolve. He knows the feeling of wanting to give up or being fed up. This finally brings us to the key text of today.
Based on the foregoing, let us come boldly unto the throne of grace. Let's us not despair. Let us not think that our mistakes or poor choices of the past are too damaging. Rather, let us seek help. There is enough grace and help to go round. There is plenty mercy to serve our messy selves.
*MEDITATION:*
*We have a great height priest, who have taken the road we are now taking and who saw all the twists and turns but made it to heaven unscathed*
